News > Supergroup Expanding As Other Fashion Retailers Struggle
At a time when other high street shops are struggling the fashion retail group Supergroup is bucking the trend. The company is supported with two strong brands Cult Clothing and Superdry.
Currently the group has 22 stores in the UK and plans to open a further 40 stores over the next three years. With sales up 17 per cent Supergroup are in an excellent position to successfully achieve this ambitious expansion plan
Supergroup owner, Julian Dunkerton explains the downturn in the commercial property market makes this a perfect time for them to open new stores, "It's very competitive for landlords at the moment. If there are 50 landlords that want you and you can only open 12 stores then it gets into a very competitive environment. There aren't many retailers expanding".
Although Cult Clothing has steadily become established as an influential high street fashion retailer, Superdry is the success story behind Supergroup. Following a trip to Tokyo in 2003, Julian Dunkerton became inspired to produce a clothing brand to take on the might of high street brands like Bench.
With the help of David Beckham who was seen wearing a Superdry leather jacket, the brand has rapidly grown into a global force, with it now being sold in over 22 countries.
The next challenge for Supergroup is the urban brand, Breed 77. Plans are underway to open a 3,000 sq ft standalone Covent Garden store in February next year. Many more are planned if this proves to be a success.
Superdry is available to buy at House of Fraser.
