Burberry is to cut 540 jobs as the fashion brand suffered poor sales for the last three months trading of 2008. As part of a plan to save £50 million a year the brand is closing its sewing factory in Rotherham with the lose of 290 jobs.
After seeing disappointing sales of their Thomas Burberry brand, a range aimed at the youth market, Burberry also plans to cut 250 jobs in Spain.
Burberry's chief executive, Angela Ahrendts, said the cost-cutting drive would help the company "trade through the current difficult environment and emerge even stronger when the global economy recovers". She said Burberry expected to hit its profit expectations.
